Big Bikes in Baja could just as easily be called an introduction to Baja, because it almost always leaves riders wanting more. This tour delivers a true sampler of what Baja has to offer the adventure motorcyclist, blending rugged terrain, remote landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable coastal scenery. It also includes a rare opportunity to travel deep into both Baja Norte and Baja Sur to experience the Pacific gray whales up close, a moment many riders describe as genuinely life changing.
From a riding perspective, this trip strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and adventure. The route is approximately 40 percent off-road, 20 percent rough or weathered pavement, with the remainder made up of good pavement. While none of it is extreme, every mile feels adventurous. The riding falls in the easy to intermediate range, with rocky roads, a few steep and rocky climbs, and sections of sand providing the most technical challenges. It is well suited for big adventure bikes and riders looking to experience Baja without feeling overwhelmed.
The journey begins at Rawhyde Ranch in Southern California, where the group gathers for a welcome dinner, orientation, and a chance to get to know one another. On the first riding day, the group heads south to the Mexican border, crossing at the quiet Tecate checkpoint. From there, it is a short ride to Rancho Santa Veronica, a former bullfighting training center turned legendary moto hangout. This sprawling hacienda offers a safe, comfortable, and character-rich introduction to Mexico and sets the tone for the days ahead.
Day two is nearly all off-road, following the Compadre Trail toward the iconic Mike’s Sky Ranch. Sitting directly on the Baja 1000 race course, Mike’s Sky Ranch is one of the most famous moto destinations in Mexico. Built decades ago in complete isolation, it has become a pilgrimage site for riders seeking Baja’s raw spirit and remote beauty.
From Mike’s, the route continues east toward the Gulf of California. The group rides to San Felipe for a late lunch by the water before potentially continuing south to Gonzaga Bay, home to one of Baja’s most picturesque waterfront hotels. If the group stays at Alfonsina’s, rooms sit just steps from the water, and dinner features fish tacos prepared from the day’s fresh catch.
The journey then turns south, combining new pavement with some of the rockiest riding of the trip near Coco’s Corner before rejoining Highway 1. From there, the route passes through the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve and into Baja Sur, arriving at San Ignacio Lagoon. San Ignacio is one of Baja’s true oasis towns, a lush palm-filled canyon that feels almost unreal after hours of desert riding.
A full rest day in San Ignacio is dedicated to whale watching. Riding pauses as riders board pangas to meet Pacific gray whales in their breeding grounds, often close enough to touch. This experience alone makes the journey unforgettable.
The final riding days trace the Pacific coast north, with overnight stops determined by conditions and group pace. The tour concludes with a scenic run through Baja wine country, a return to the Tecate border crossing, and a final ride back to Rawhyde Ranch, where hot showers, dinner, and one last night together bring the adventure full circle.
Big Bikes in Baja is not about racing through Mexico. It is about experiencing Baja at the right pace, taking in its landscapes, people, and wild beauty in a way that stays with you long after the ride ends.
