Cur·ric·u·lum Vi·tae
noun
A record of experience, preparation, and capability.
Latin: “course of one’s life.”
Expedition CV is Rawhyde’s combination training program and learning-tour and represents the final step and missing link in true adventure rider development. It is designed to provide riders with a practical baseline of knowledge, judgment, and real-world experience needed for meaningful, self-sufficient backcountry travel. This is not a classroom exercise or a tightly controlled training environment. It is an expedition in the truest sense of the word.
We strongly recommend completing our Level 3 program, Next Step, prior to attending Expedition CV. To make that progression seamless, Next Step is always offered the weekend immediately before CV begins. Together, they form a purposeful bridge from skill development to real-world application.
The name “CV” is intentional. While Curriculum Vitae is commonly understood as a resume, in this context it represents a rider’s resume of experience. Expedition CV is where skills, judgment, preparation, and decision-making come together under real conditions. This program is part expedition preparedness, part education, and part adventure. It takes place in the real world, with real distances, real terrain, and real consequences, rather than the controlled setting of a training facility.
Expedition CV has two primary objectives. The first is to give riders a deep and practical understanding of what preparedness truly means for backcountry travel. This includes route planning, self-assessment, equipment choices, risk management, navigation, and understanding how small decisions compound over long days and remote miles.
The second objective is to give riders a clear measuring stick for their own abilities. Expedition CV helps riders develop an honest understanding of where their skills are strong, where they need improvement, and most importantly, when it is the right time to turn around. This ability to self-assess is one of the most critical skills an adventure rider can possess.
While Expedition CV is a serious and purposeful program, it is also an exceptional adventure. The expedition takes place in the deserts of California and Nevada, with Death Valley National Park serving as the centerpiece. Death Valley is widely regarded as one of the world’s great adventure riding destinations. Many of its most iconic locations sit 50 miles or more into the backcountry, accessible only by long, rugged dirt routes.
With roughly 150 miles of paved road and more than 1,100 miles of dirt roads and trails, Death Valley offers an unmatched environment for expedition-style riding. Vast distances, isolation, and striking landscapes combine to create a setting where preparation and decision-making matter.
Expedition CV is where training becomes experience, experience becomes judgment, and judgment becomes confidence. It is a defining step for riders who want to move beyond structured classes and into the realities of true adventure riding.
